Tooth Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored fillings - also known as Composite fillings - are dental restorations designed to blend well with the teeth and appear more natural than amalgam (silver) fillings. Composite fillings are chemically bonded to the teeth so they allow the dentists to preserve more of the natural tooth structure during filling process.

What are the indications for tooth colored fillings?

If you have a cavity, chipped tooth or an old deteriorated filling, you may be a candidate for compoiste filling. Tooth colored fillings are called bonding when they are used to cover the discolored tooth, malformed tooth such as peg lateral and to close space between front teeth such as diastema.

What can you expect if your dentist decides a composite filling for right for you?

During the visit, your gum and teeth will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic around the tooth. Once the tooth is numb, the decayed portion of the tooth will be removed and cleaned to make room for a new filling. A bonding agent will be placed and cured with a light. The resin filling material will be placed, cured with light and shaped and polished to complete the process. You should be able to return normal activity and oral care immediately after the visit. It is normal for the treated teeth to have slight hot and cold sensitivity  for a few days. But if the sensitivity get worse or persist for a few weeks, you should report to your dentist.

Crowns and Bridges

What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns and bridges are the most common oral restorations for damaged and missing teeth.

A dental crown is a cap placed over a damaged tooth to restore it natural appearance and functional strength.  Crowns are the treatment of choice if the decay has destroyed a large portion of the tooth and filling may not be strong enough to restore its function. Sometime, a tooth was cracked due to traumatic reasons and a crown may be needed to restore the function. Dental crowns can be made from different materials such as metal, gold, porcelain-fused to metal, ceramic. Porcelain crowns made of zirconia has become very popular due to its optimal strength, durability and aesthetic.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a special dental prosthetic that bridge the gap made by one or more missing teeth.  The neighboring teeth act as the support (abutment) for the bridge. When a tooth is lost, neighboring and opposing teeth can move or drift into the missing tooth area. A dental bridge can restore aesthetic form and function of the missing teeth. A dental bridge can be made from porcelain fused to metal and all ceramic material. If a dental bridge is fabricated and maintained properly, it could last for many years or decades.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat infected, inflamed or dead (necrotic) nerve inside a tooth. The procedure is to stop pain, to prevent infection from spreading and to prevent from tooth loss. If a tooth infection is untreated for long, it can spread and lead to tooth loss.

You might need a root canal treatment if you have

  • a painful tooth

  • a very sensitive to cold or hot tooth

  • a tooth that is damaged by decay or trauma

Root Canal Procedure Process

During the initial consultation, the affected tooth will be x-rayed to determine the condition of the tooth.

  • The tooth will be numbed with an anesthetic.

  • A protective covering (dental dam) will be placed over the treatment area to provide aseptic condition and to prevent patient from accidentally swallowing any material.

  • Your dentist will remove infected pulp, infectious agent and debris from the tooth and its canals and clean them with cleaning agents.

  • Your dentist will then seal the canals with biocompatible sealer and filling material to prevent the tooth from recurrent infection.

  • The tooth will be restored with a durable filling material or a dental crown.

Dentures and Partials

Dentures are dental prosthetic teeth made of composite, ceramic or acrylic or any  combination of them. Sometime dental implant or dental bridge are not feasible due to the long span of missing teeth area or due to high cost, then dentures would be the perfect solution.  When a few or a number of missing teeth are replaced, that prosthetic is called partial denture. When all the teeth are missing on a dental arch or jaw bone, complete denture is used to replace missing teeth.

Dentures can be made to mimic your natural teeth and gum correctly. The color, texture and translucency of the ceramic and acrylic can be customized to the patient's need.

Dentures can correct the chewing and phonetic issues caused by missing teeth.

If fabricated properly, dentures can make the face fuller and provide youthful appearance for people with missing teeth.

Fabrication of Dentures

During the initial consultation, your dentist will check the condition of the remaining teeth, health of jawbone and gums. Digital x-rays may be taken to check those conditions.

A digital or physical impression will be taken to get the mold of the jaw bone to make the denture.

Your dentist will take some measurement to get the correct length of the prosthetic teeth.

Your dentist will also find the correct color, shape  and texture of the teeth and gum.

Before the final prosthetic fabrication, your dentist might let you take a look at pre-fabricated denture set-up ( a step called wax try in)

During the final denture delivery visit, your dentist will check the correct bite and function of the denture and will make any necessary adjustment

Denture would last for a long time if proper care is taken to maintain them.

If gingivitis is not treated promptly, it can lead to a more severe and devastating  form called periodontitis. Periodontitis not only cause inflammation and bleeding of the gum but also deterioration of the underling jawbone.  The goal of periodontal treatment is to remove infectious agent and halt the gum and jawbone infection and provide conditions so that periodontal tissue can heal and regenerate to healthy state

Symptoms of Periodontitis

Sensitive or painful gums or teeth

Swollen gums which bleed during eating, chewing or brushing teeth.

Built-up with yellow or dark calculus around teeth and gums.

Receding gum lines and exposed tooth roots.

Severe bad breath

How to treat Periodontitis

Scaling and root planing is the most common procedure to treat periodontitis. Before the procedure, your dentist will take x-rays and check the condition of the gum and the teeth. An ultrasonic scaling device or hand scaler will be used to remove tartar or calculus built-up where bacteria adhere and cause gum infection. A water jet will be used to wash out the bacteria and debris. Your dentist might use laser device to remove decayed tissue around teeth and gum pocket. Your dentist may place antibiotic medication or medicated dressing to provide tissue healing and regrowth.

It is very important to maintain your periodontal health regularly to prevent from tooth loss.
